Behind the Barricades: Solidarity with the Sudanese Revolution

Behind the Barricades - solidarity with the Sudanese revolution

In 2019, for two months, protestors from all over Sudan shared a profoundly transformative experience that came to be a defining moment within the revolutionary process itself. Within weeks, an experimental town from the people’s imagination came to life behind makeshift barricades. Here await speaker’s corners to discuss politics, a communal kitchen, a system for removing waste, medical tents, a school for homeless children, free legal advice and a library with books that were previously banned - a whole world. The people experimented and imagined together in rejection of the regime and their enforced cemented social structures.  The organization and composition of the sit-in itself provided radically different ways of living and new horizons. At the heart of the encampment were the art spaces full of murals and paintings, poetry, and jam nights, singing, moving, and learning together - forever ingrained in the collective memory.

Even after the violent dispersement of the sit in, the revolution continued undeterred.

Until last year in April, when the militaries went to war against each other and against all forms of life. Now more than ever, the people are left to fend for themselves and for each other. Organized in emergency response rooms, they try to provide food, shelter, medical care, coordinate safe corridors and aid under the most gruesome circumstances. Drawing upon their years of experience in resistance and decentralized self-organisation, they continue to nurture the seeds of a different future. A testament to life and a rebellion against militarism, occupation and colonialism. A love letter to their people.

We invite you to reflect and connect with these powerful moments of resistance though videos and sound documentation of the sit in. We will also cook and eat sudani dinner / fatoor together & proceeds go to emergency response rooms.
