Witches: hunted, appropriated, empowered, queered

Anna Colin

Drawing on a recent curatorial project and a trans-disciplinary publication titled Witches: hunted, appropriated, empowered, queered (Editions B42, 2012), this presentation will address the political potential of the witch, a figure that oscillates between the margins and the public sphere, and which has long crystallised society’s fears.

Through short films, excerpts from interviews, images and texts, this audiovisual lecture will combine historical accounts, fictional literature, activist experiences, theoretical propositions and artistic reflections on gender, myth and alterity – forty years after the witch returned in a new radical guise in the activist imagination, and at a time when alleged witches are still persecuted in certain parts of the world.

Anna Colin, curator of the exhibition series and editor of the publication, will present the publication and an audiovisual lecture followed by a discussion. The presentation and lecture will be held in English, with possible ad-hoc translations.
